Children`s Film Society India (CFSI) is an organization producing children`s films and television programs in different languages. Set up on 11th May 1955, it is an autonomous body which functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. Pandit Hriday Nath Kunzru is the president of the organization and its headquarters is situated at Mumbai. Since years CFSI has been involved in making and distributing quality content for children in the form of feature films, documentaries, animations and television shows.
History of Children`s Film Society India
Children`s Film Society India was conceived and founded by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru who was also known as Chacha Nehru owing to his love for children. Jaldeep was the first movie produced by the organization in 1956. This adventure film featured Bollywood actress Mala Sinha and was directed by Kidar Sharma. CFSI selects its chairperson for every three years and since its inception several prominent personalities have served the position including Nafisa Ali (2005-2008) and Nandita Das (2008-2012). Sai Paranjpye has been the chairperson of CFSI twice. Presently actor, director and writer Amol Gupte serves the organization as its chairperson since 2012.
Vision of Children`s Film Society India
Children`s Film Society India is dedicated in providing wholesome entertainment to the children which aids in developing their perspective and critical thinking and reflecting it on the society. It aims at educating and enlightening children in fun filled and delightful manner. It also organizes nationwide screening of films to make these quality content reach to about four million children annually. The organization is accredited as the prime producer of children`s film in the whole of South Asia with an alluring catalogue of 250 films in 10 different languages. It plays a major role in strengthening the children`s film movement in the country and also works to promote the children films made in India across the world.
Activities of Children`s Film Society India
The main activities of CFSI encompass production of short films and feature films for children in different languages on the country. Subsidized shows are organized and film prints are distributed across the nation. Since its inception CFSI has made 52 short documentaries, 9 puppet films, 45 short animations and 114 feature films and a number of news magazines. International Children`s Film Festival is also organized by CFSI in every alternate year which showcases children`s films and invites children from all around the globe. The films produced by CFSI have also been screened at various national and international film festivals and many of them have walked away with prestigious accolades. In fact its first production Jaldeep bagged the first prize for best Children`s Film at the Venice Film Festival in 1957. Several eminent filmmakers have made significant contribution to CFSI in developing valuable content for children such as Pankaj Advani, Rituparno Ghosh, Ram Mohan, Santosh Shivan, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Satyen Bose, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Shyam Benegal and many more. In addition to them, many new filmmakers have also portrayed new and enlightening concepts through children`s films.
