Chikhaldara, MaharashtraChikhaldara is a municipal council and city in Amravati district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a plateau and is one of the cool air locations of Maharashtra. It is located in cotton growing area also a Historical valued place where, Lord Krishna carried away Rukmini. It is the only coffee growing area of Maharashtra. Chikhaldara is situated at an altitude of 1,118 m above the sea level, and is the only coffee growing region of Maharashtra.

Brief History of Chikhaldara

Chikaldara was discovered by Captain Robinson of the Hyderabad Regiment in 1823. The Englishmen found it particularly attractive because the lush green hue of the place reminded them of England. When the leaves fell in September/October, they were reminded of autumn in England. There was even a proposal to make it the seat of the Government of India

Mythological Importance of Chikaldara
Chikhaldara is named after the king Kichaka, who was killed by Bhima, one of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata. He is said to have been killed by Bhima and thrown in the deep valleys called dari in Marathi language (language of the State of Maharashtra) hence the name Kichakdara which was later on spelled as Chikhaldara.

There are indeed many places in and around Chikhaldara that are popular among the tourists. The places of interest around Chikhaldara are Melghat Tiger Project, Dhakana-Kolkaz National Park, Hurricane Point, Prospect Point, Devi Point, Gavilgad and Narnala Fort, the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Gardens, the Tribal Museum and the Semadoh Lake.

With a cool breezy climate Chikhaldara is an excellent place to be explored during summer.
