The franchise of Chennaiyin Football Club is owned by Vita Dani, Bollywood actor and Indian cricketer and the captain of Indian Cricket Team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bollywood actorAbhishek Bachchan. Chennaiyin FC played their home matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which has a seating capacity of about 40,000. On 21st August 2014, the Indian Super League international player draft Prashant Agarwal CEO of Kshatriya Sports and Playon Skills, who is an Indian origin football expert based in London, United Kingdom and has a technical tie-up with Italian club Inter Milan represented the Team Chennai. Later the Indian Cricketer and Indian Captain in cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the co-owner of Chennaiyin Football Club.

When the Indian Super League was founded in the year 2013, the city of Chennai was one of the nine proposed cities up for franchise bidding in Indian Super League. On 14th August 2014, Chennaiyin Football Club was included as the football team in Indian Super League (ISL) and made the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai their home ground for the team.

In the Indian Super League-2015, Chennaiyin Football Club managed to retain six players namely, Balwant Singh, Jayesh Rane, Dhanachandra Singh, Jeje Lalpekhlua, Harmanjot Khabra and Abhishek Das. They also signed Godwin Franco and Mehrajuddin Wadoo. Chennaiyin Football Club won the second season of the ISL in a finale against Goa Football Club that ended in 2-3. Stiven Mendoza is noted as the top player of 2015 Indian Super League.
