Chendamangalam Fort is one of the famous forts in Kerala. It is located in Ernakulam in Kerala amidst the lush green landscape and small hillocks. The 450-years-old Chendamangalam Fort is one of the oldest forts in India. Three rivers that pass by the Fort add to its beauty. The fort stores some of the rare relics, artefacts and historical documents. Near to the fort a temple, a mosque, and a church can be sighted that stands as a symbol of religious and cultural harmony among the people of Kerala. Remains of a Jewish Synagogue can also be seen close to the fort.
History of Chendamangalam Fort
Chendamangalam Fort is situated in the historic village of Chendamangalam. The history of the village is associated with Paliam which until 1952 was the biggest joint Hindu family. Paliam was an ancient Nair family from Chendamangalam. Chendamangalam Fort served as the place for accommodation of the Paliath Acchan, the Prime Minister of Maharaja of Kochi. During the advent of the Portuguese, Paliath Acchan played a great role in the ancient history of Kerala. In 1681, the Kochi Raja bestowed upon him the title of Sarvadhyakshan (Supreme preside over all affairs).
During the 16th century the Portuguese built Vypeenkotta Seminary in Chendamangalam. The Jews resided in this village from AD 69 until 1341. Later they shifted to Fort Kochi. Chendamangalam afterwards served as the ruling point of the king of Christians of Villarvattom. The place also visited by the Archbishop Dr. Menezes of Goa in 1528. The place provides valuable materials for their learning and expedition. Hence it is visited by many students of history and foreign visitors.

In the month of April, the annual fair called "Mattachanda" (Barter System) is organized on the eve of the harvest festival Vishu.
