The Chaturshringi Temple, also known as Chattushrungi Temple, is a Hindu temple in Pune, Maharashtra. The temple is situated on the slope of a hill on Senapati Bapat Road. It is said to have been built during the reign of the Maratha king Shivaji. The temple is looked after by Chattushringi Devasthan trustees. Chaturshringi means a mountain with four peaks. Every year a fair is held at the foothills on the occasion of Navaratri. Thousands of people gather to worship the Goddess Chaturshringi during that time.
History of Chaturshringi Temple
The constructional period dates back to the era of the great Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji and is dedicated to Devi Ambareshwari. However, the Goddess is known and worshipped by other names such as- Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati and Goddess Chattushringi.
It is often told that a rich and prosperous merchant actually built the temple. He was an ardent believer of Goddess Chattushringi, and visited her temples in other places. But, as old age struck him, he could no longer visit far-off places; therefore he was hindered from praying to the Devi. On one such night, Devi Chattushringi came to his dreams, and left a lasting presence in his mind. Thus, deeply moved by this holy gesture, the merchant built the temple at the place it stands today.
Structure of Chaturshringi Temple
The Chaturshringi temple is 90 feet high and 125 feet wide and it is a symbol of power and faith. One has to climb more than 100 steps to reach the shrine of Goddess Chattushringi. In the temple premises, there are also temples of Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesha. This temple also includes eight miniature idols of Ashtavinayaka. These small temples are located on four separate hillocks.
