Charaideo consists mainly of tombs of Kings of Ahom dynasty. This was considered as the capital of the Ahom kingdom in the past. It contains the sacred burial grounds which has the graves of the royal Ahom dynasty. It has the graves of the Ahom kings and queens and is also considered as the place of ancestral Gods of the Ahoms. The tombs of Ahom kings and queens at Charaideo hillocks look very similar to the Pyramids of Egypt.This usually attract the tourists with its architecture and sculpture that depict the art of Assam in medieval days.
Charaideo includes a number of Maidams which exceed up to150.While only 30 Maidams (tombs) are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and Assam State Archaeology Department, the remaining are unprotected. The biggest among these unprotected maidams is the Bali Maidam near Nimonagarh. This Maidam is called Bali Maidam, because it got a lot of obstruction from excess sands (Bali) which surround the Maidam. Maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India these are some of the prominent sites of Assam which are included in the World Heritage List.
Thus Charaideo is one of the most prominent historical spots of Assam which depicts the life of Ahom dynasty. Known for some unique architecture this is often visited by the tourists of Assam.
