Chang- Ai Ceremony is one of the most popular traditions of the land. According to this the family who wishes to perform the festival undergoes through a vigorous ritual to ascertain their level of purity that is enlisted in the rites of Toulsuo. This mainly includes the family which has been successful in harvesting three successful crops of paddy in three consecutive years. Usually the performing party keeps it a secret until the day of harvesting comes. Whenever the party decides to perform this ritual he informs his Becha relatives, the chief and the priest. As the society is primarily agro-based the performance of the ritual goes through vigorous stages that make the performance more successful.
Chang- Ai Ceremony then reaches the day when the harvest is to begin. On the day of harvest the performer, his Becha relative and the chief finally announce the commencement of the ritual. On the commencement of the ritual, the chief along with the priest and the Becha relative of the man all are present along with all the able-bodied men of the village. Every one reaches the field with a bottle of wine that has been prepared by the performer. This special wine is known as Phoul-Zu. Once everyone reaches the field the priest declares the beginning of the ritual by offering the beer to the entire becha relative. The moment the priest announces the beginning of the ritual it is accompanied with drinking, dancing which reflects the attitude of all the tribesmen who give their consent. Overall the festival includes dancing and singing in celebration of the success. This is then followed by a treat that is prepared by the one who performs the ceremony. The lady of the family distributes rice and Zu to all and arranges a sumptuous meal for all.
Thus this ceremony is one of the agro-based festivals of the Kuki tribe that is celebrated with the hope to have more successful crops.
