Champanagar is the place where Buddha has delivered various sermons. It lies in the district of Bhagalpur, Bihar. This place derives its name from the Champak trees that are found here in abundance. It is said that Gautama Buddha had visited Champanagar several times. It is during these visits that he had preached to his devotees. Champanagar today is an important Buddhist pilgrimage center and is of great historical significance.
Here Buddha taught several important discourses, such as, Sonadanda Sutta, Kandaraka Sutta and others. The Sonadanda Sutta is a part of The Long Discourses and Kandaraka Sutta is from The Middle Length Discourses.
Gaggara`s Lotus Lake in Champanagar was once famous for the beautiful lotuses that grew in it. Buddha generally delivered his lectures in the plantation of Champaka trees. It was his favorite spot. At the left side of the lake lies the Sarovana Talab. In 1900s several Buddha statues were found in the lake in Champanagar.
