The festival does not have any particular date for organizing hence the date is fixed by referring to the Hindu calendar. Roughly the festival is celebrated during the month of September or October.

History of Chakradhar Festival
Chakradhar Festival is celebrated in honour of the Maharaja Chakeadhra Singh. The city of Raigrah in Chattisgarh boasts of a wonderful cultural scenario. It is a land of great classical musicians and Kathak dancers. The famous personalities who have born include Vijaya Sharma, Shree Firtu Maharaj, and the most important is the Maharaja Chakeadhra Singh in whose memory the festival of Chakradhra was started.

Maharaja Chakradhar Singh had been the emperor of the Raigarh city. Apart from being a great king and ruler, he was also famous for his patron of dance and music. He was a skilled tabla player and an expert dancer. Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh was a talented and a famous skilled personality among other musicians and dancers. He also an accomplished writer who is credited with writing many books related to music. The Maharaja Chakradhar Samaraho was organised in the city of Raigarh as an honour and tribute to this great personality. His contribution for music and dance is cherished even today in the city.

The Chakradhar Festival was initiated by the Chakradhar Lalit Kala Kendra and the Ustad Allauddin Khan Sangeet Academy. These are the two main institutes which are dedicated in support of music.
