Chaitra is the name of the third lunar month. Chaitra falls in the month of February to March. Chaitra is the last month of the Hindu calendar. As per the India`s National calendar also, Chaitra is the last month of a year.

The month of Chaitra begins in March. The Bengali calendar also regards the month of Chaitra as the last month, where it is called Choitro. As per the Nepali calendar, Chaitra ends on April 13. The spring season arrives in the month of Chaitra. Holi, the spring festival of colour is celebrated on the eve of Chaitra (namely, the last day of Phalgun).

Chaitra begins on the new moon or the full moon around the same time of year in lunar religious calendars. The ninth day of the month of Chaitra is celebrated as Ram Navami, which is said to be the birth day of Lord Ram. Some other festivals celebrated in India in the month of Chaitra are Maharashtrian New Year or Gudi Padwa in the first of Chaitra.

According to the solar religious calendars, Chaitra begins with the Sun`s entry into Pisces and is usually the last month of the year. Chaitra is also a Kashmeri word for `snow` or `snow season`.
