This Buddhist monastery is amazingly suspended at the centre of the mountain. It belongs to the Gelukpa order and shelters only two Buddhist monks. Despite being a small monastery, every year it attracts tourists from various corners of the world.

Location of Cave Monastery
Cave monastery is located in the Shergol village, about 40 km from Kargil. It is positioned on the Wakha river valley between Kargil and Mulbekh, about 240 kms from Srinagar.

Attractions of Cave Monastery
The singular architectural beauty of the Shergol monastery attracts a large number of pilgrims and tourists all the year round. In fact, the monastery is an object of curiosity due to the great architecture behind its construction. It is positioned in such a way that it gives an impression of being hanging out of the mountain. Only the front portion of the monastery is visible.

The walls of the monastery are delicately adorned with fine murals. The monastery houses some beautiful and interesting frescoes. Underneath the monastery is a Buddhist nunnery which is used by nuns for meditation. The village below the monastery comprises of more than thirty households.

Connectivity of Cave Monastery
The monastery can be accessed by air and road. Srinagar airport lies at a distance of 204 km and the airport at Leh is 230 km away from Kargil. And if one wants to reach by road then one can avail buses and taxis from Kargil, Shergol is mere 40 km away.
