Cathedral of the Holy Name is a celebrated ancient shrine nestled in Mumbai. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Archbishop of Bombay and headquarters of the Archdiocese of Bombay. Highly regarded by the Christian community, the church is situated in the prominent commercial centre of Colaba. Cathedral of the Holy Name is known for its beautiful architecture. It was declared a heritage building in 1998.

History of Cathedral of the Holy Name
It was constructed to replace the older Cathedral which was located in the Bhuleshwar area of the city. However, that site was sold off, and the former parochial church of the Holy Name in Colaba was elevated as the Pro-Cathedral. The foundation stone of Cathedral of the Holy Name was laid in 1902. The devotees were allowed to visit the church since 1905. It was sanctified as a cathedral on 28th November 1964. Sine then, it has been serving as the Archbishop`s seat and mother church of the Archdiocese.

Beauty of Cathedral of the Holy Name
The church is known for its impressive architecture and possessions. It is constructed in Gothic-style using grey stone. It is designed with magnificent buttresses, towers and spires. It has a carved wooden door that leads to the stunning altar that houses a giant statue of Jesus Christ. The church is adorned with stained glass windows, beautiful frescoes, an elegant pipe organ, carved embellishments and murals. It has a large gold embroidered stole which it received as a gift from Pope John XXIII. It posses another stole gifted by Pope Pius XII containing the red hat given to Cardinal Valerian Gracias. Another attraction is the bell gifted by Pope Paul VI during the 38th International Eucharistic Congress held in Mumbai in 1964.

The church is also home to gravestones of notable personalities and archbishops. The church remains open everyday and it organizes special liturgies for children on Sundays to help them learn about Christianity.
