Caminata Iyer is one of the most celebrated authors, as well as a scholar and editor, from Tamil Nadu who lived in the twentieth century. Iyer has carved an enduring niche for himself in Tamil literary works and has contributed greatly for the progression of modern era in Tamil literature. Most of his literary creations written in Tamil language are highly popular and much admired for their choice of diction and their proficiency to utilize emotions and captivate the hearts of readers. He dedicated his life to the compilation and edition of Tamil literary works that were written on palm leaves. Caminata Iyer has published them after careful analysis and study and without any kind of fault. Apart from this, the renowned Tamil author also wrote notes about authors, precious prefaces and detailed explanatory notes regarding the contents of the books.

Due to the unrelenting efforts of the scholar Caminata Iyer, various classics from the Sangam literature, such as Civaka Cintamani and other Puranas, parani kuravahci, ula, kovai and tutu were released and published in excellent editions. He had also written many critical notes on various Tamil literary works like the Patirruppattu, the Pattuppattu, Purananuru and others. These works are well researched and are considered as an asset of the Tamil literary world. Further more, the much respected Tamil author and editor has created other works that recount in prose the stories of epics, in a brief and concise manner. Some of Caminata Iyer`s compositions that falls in this category include the works of Curukkam (The Brief Story of Utayanan), Utayanan Kataic, Buddha Dharma and Manimekalai Kataic Cumkkam (The Brief Story of the epic Manimekalai).

Caminata Iyer wrote a detailed biography of his mentor Mmatcicuntaram Pillai. The work is unique in the genre of biographies in Tamil. He also constructed short biographies about other savants as well. The author had written many essays too, which include Ninaivu Mancari, Nalluraik Kovai, Palaiyatum Putiyatum and Nan Kantatum Kettatum. The biographies, critical essays and other analytical notes of Caminata Iyer contributed to great extent for the development of Tamil prose during this century. The style of prose of the author is proverbial for its faultless lucidity and simplicity.

The well known poet Caminata Iyer from Tamil Nadu could not establish himself as one of the greatest Tamil poets, although he was excellent at composing hymns and verses. He devoted his noble life to the Tamil country and brought fame to the land. Through his various literary works, Caminata Iyer narrated the attitude and actions of the local people with sophistication, which is suitable to the cultural traditions of the region.
