Brijesh Pursuram Patel equally excelled as a right-hand middle-order batsman and a fantastic outfielder in Indian cricket in the realms of domestic cricket. In the Ranji Trophy matches, he had a proud total of 7126 runs, made at a high average of 57.00 and multiple centuries. He had delivered some of the fascinating shots and fielding tactics at the level of national contest and Duleep Trophy. Brijesh Patel was born on 24th November, 1952, in Vadodara, of Gujarat. This man of merit, performed as a right-hand batsman in the Indian national cricket team from 1974 to 1979.
Career of Brijesh Patel
Brijesh Patel had taken part in 21 Test matches, beginning from 1974 to 1977, and maintained a steady average of 29.45. Though, he had bowling- prowess, however he had never been given scope to utilise his right-arm off breaks for the Indian team. The West Indies tour of 1976, unfolded his potentialities. In his four innings, he attained 207 runs, at an unrivalled average of 207.00. His score of 115, not out, was his greatest Test Batting achievement. This he procured, at Port of Spain, with Sunil Gavaskar, while imparting an additional, 204 runs for the fifth wicket.
Other worth-mentioning innings, included 73 not out against West Indies in at Mumbai, in 1974-75, a master score of 83 against England at the same spot after two years and a storming 82 against New Zealand, again at Bombay in 1976-77. He represented India in 10 ODIs where he scored 243 runs at an average of 30.37 with a top score of 82.
His declining standards in the Australian tour got him excluded from the team. However, things returned in shape, when he was re-invited for the England tour in 1979. This was probably done, to secure solidarity in performance-level in the World Cup. Brijesh Patel next venture was in the area of cricket administration.
