Bratya Basu is currently the minister in the Mamata Banerjee`s cabinet. He is higher education minister in the Indian state of West Bengal. He is a popular figure in West Bengal, who wears different hats at the same time. Apart from being the minister, he is also a dramatist, director and an actor. Before coming into full time politics he also was engaged as a full time professor for Bengali language in a college in Kolkata.
He was elected a MLA, from the Dum Dum constituency in 2011 Assembly Election of West Bengal.
Early Life of Bratya Basu
Bratya, the son of popular theatre personality of West Bengal - Bishnu Basu, was born on 25th September 1969. He completed his education from Presidency College, Kolkata with Bachelor of Arts in Bengali. He later earned his masters degree from University of Calcutta.
Career of Bratya Basu
Bratya Basu with a rich background of theatre got involved with Bengali theatre and drama from a very young age. Initially of course he joined the theatre group as Sound Operator at Ganasakti Theatre of Kolkata. Along with theatre and drama he also took up teaching as a career, and taught as a Bengali professor in City College, Kolkata under University of Calcutta.,
Bratya Basu is a fine author and writer as well, who wrote several plays and also directed many of them as well. Some of the well-known and renowned Bengali plays written by Bratya are Ashaleen, Shahriyar, Aranyadeb, Chatushkon etc. One of the plays that created huge uproar during his initial days was Winkle-Wwinkle. In the year 2008, Bratya Basu performed a theatre group of his own by the name of "Bratya Jon". The group`s maiden production, that has been very popular, is "Ruddhasangeet" on the life of Debabrata Biswas.
Apart from being a popular drama and theatre personality from West Bengal, Brayta has also tried his stint in Bengali cinema and has acted under popular and established Bengali film directors. Some of the people under whom he has worked in films are Gautam Ghose and Suman Mukhopadhyay. He has also acted in a number of other films, including Kaalbela.
Bratya Basu, himself has been involved in movie directions and has three names under kitty, they are Raastaa (theme of youth moving into terrorism), Teesta, (a film on society and the failure of romance) and Tara (a movie on Maoists).
Political Career of Bratya Basu
Bratya Basu`s emergence has been a sudden one. And right in the first attempt he won a seat for his part - All India Trinamool Congress. He fought the assembly election in West Bengal on his party`s ticket against a heavy weight leader of Communist Part of India named Gautam Deb from Dum Dum (Vidhan Sabha constituency) and won.
With the win he was made the Minister for Higher Education in Mamata Banerjee`s cabinet. And since then he has been working hard towards improving the state of education in West Bengal.
