Brabourne Stadium is a cricket ground in the city of Mumbai. The stadium is located near Churchgate Railway Station near south of Mumbai. The stadium is owned by the Cricket Club of India. Brabourne Stadium was built on a piece of land, reclaimed from the sea. The stadium was officially opened on December 7, 1937 following a match between The CCI and Lord Tennyson`s team. Neville de Mello gave the idea that the ground would be the property of Lord of India. The stadium was quite luxurious in the British period. It was also a multi sports complex, which hosted International Tennis.
But the Brabourne Stadium has its own problem as the infrastructure was very old and it did not have the capacity of holding many people. There were also constant dispute regarding the distribution of tickets, as a result of which the Mumbai Cricket Association built their own stadium half a mile away.
The glorious days of Brabourne stadium has faded away and it hosts occasional first class match. In this stadium Sachin Tendulkar made his first double century of his first class career in the match between Mumbai and Australia.
The Brabourne stadium has a very fascinating history. After it was built, the Pentangular shifted here from the Bombay gymkhana in 1937-38. This stadium houses the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters. The stadium was named after the then Bombay governor Lord Brabourne at the suggestion of Maharaja of Patiala.
The first test match played at the Brabourne stadium was between India and West Indies in the year 1948-49. This stadium hosted seventeen tests before the eventual separation of Bombay Cricket Association in 1973. After a long interval of thirteen years International cricket returned to Brabourne when Pakistan played against Australia in a one day international.
Brabourne stadium has the seating capacity of 20,000. There is no arrangement for the floodlights. The ends name as the Pavilion end and the Church Gate End.
