Bombay Gymkhana stadium is located in South Mumbai, and set up in the year 1875. It was established in one of the premier gymkhanas in the city of Mumbai, India. It is located in the southern part of the city of Mumbai and was built only for British by English architect, Claude Batley.
The Gymkhana Ground lies in the southern part of Azad Maidan. The ground is a leased property and the area is triangular shaped. Cricket is mainly played in this ground during the winter months. Apart from cricket, rugby and football is also a popular game during the monsoon months. This ground used to be a popular venue for erstwhile Bombay Pentagular Cricket matches. This was the very ground that hosted India`s first cricket match on 15th December 1933. CK Nayudu was the captain for that particular match.
Other matches like the Bombay Quadrangular Tournaments were also held in this stadium. But ever since Brabourne Stadium took its place in 1948, the stadium hasn`t hosted any match. The last international event of some degree was held in the year 1996 Cricket World Cup when the Australian team used the ground for practice purposes.
Apart from Cricket, which is certainly the main attraction, the ground also hosts national rugby tournaments, and also international squash competitions. At the southern end of the stadium there is a swimming pool.
From the last decade memberships are awarded to girls. But previously only men would get membership of the club.
The Bombay Gymkhana is one of the most exclusive clubs in the country: the waiting period for membership extends into years, and the fees are in the millions of rupees
