Bolpur, Birbhum District, West BengalBolpur is a municipality town in Birbhum District of West Bengal. Bolpur is 145 kilometers north of Kolkata. This place is best known for the proximity to Visva Bharati, the university set up by the Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore. The name "Bolpur" comes from the word "Boli-pur". In Bengali "boli" means "slaughter" and "pur" means "city".

Bolpur is the sub divisional town of Birbhum District. History says that, Bolpur was a small village under Supur Pargana. But now Bolpur has become an international city of culture and learning. There are several places in Bolpur to see.

Kalikapur
Kalikapur is one of the best known places in Bolpur. History says that the reference of Kalikapur is there in the mythological stories of Mahabharata and Ramayana. In the past it was a typical village. Red Soil is found everywhere. Kalikapur has the beautiful landscape beauty. It is attracted by the national and international tourists.

British East India Company established the first railway line in 1859, when the Sahebganj loopline was extended beyond the river Ajay. Bolpur railway station was established in 1860. Along with this establishment, the District Court, Police Station, Sub Registry office was also established in Bolpur. Christan missionaries came and they found church which was known as Mission compound.

Bolpur- A Developed Town
Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, the father of Noble Laurate Rabindranth Tagore established the centre of Religious mediation in Bolpur. Rabindranath Tagore established Visva Bharati University. Bolpur is situated in Birbhum District, with the district head quater Siuri. Bolpur has a latitudinal and longitudinal extent of 23 degree and 40 minutes and 0 seconds north, 87 degree 43 minutes 0 seconds east.Bolpur, Birbhum District, West Bengal

Climate of Bolpur
The climate of Bolpur is very hot in the summer months. Bolpur is above 40 degrees Celsius in April to July. One of the three sub-divisions of Birbhum district is also named after the town of Bolpur. The Bolpur sub-division consists of Bolpur- Sriniketan, Nanoor, Labhpur and Ilambazar blocks.

Bolpur Municipality
There is a Bolpur municipality. Bolpur municipality is divided into 19 wards. Until 2010, the Indian National Congress was in power in it. In the 2010 municipal elections, the municipality faced a hung verdict. Later, the Trinamool Congress with nine councillors formed the board by taking the support of eight Congress councillors.

Tourism in Bolpur
Bolpur consists of many tourist spots of pilgrimage, nature and leisure tourism. These are Nanoor, Kenduli, Bakreswar, Nalhati, Santiniketan, Kopai River, Khowai, Sriniketan and many other places.
