Boiyakonda Gangamma Temple also referred to as Boikonda Gangamma or Baikonda is a Hindu pilgrimage centre located in Chowdepalli Mandal in Pungunur taluk. The presiding deity of the temple is goddess Gangamma Devi. The temple, reciting the age old legends of the deity, is positioned in Chittoor district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Legends of Boiyakonda Gangamma Temple
Boiyakonda Gangamma Temple is associated with several legendary tales. According to it is said that the idol of the goddess, bestowing blessings on her devotees, was recovered by the ancient local people referred to as Boiya`s. The idol, installed by them, was deeply revered and worshipped by them.
The word `Boiyakonda` pronounced as `Baa-ee-kon-da` signifies mountain having a well. The idol of the Goddess has been installed alongside the well. It is firmly believed by the devotees that the deity possesses immense power and if sincerely worshipped with devotion, destroys all evils.
Devotees flocking the temple premises offer a hen or a sheep for sacrifice. The meat procured is later cooked at the same place and consumed by the all. Theertha, the holy water of the well nearby is also consumed by the devotees visiting temple. It is believed that it helps in curing and warding off omen.
