Bir Gurdialpura Wildlife Sanctuary, located at a distance of 15 kilometres from the city of Samana in the Patiala district of the Indian state Punjab, is one of the large sanctuaries of the state. It covers an area of 620 hectares. It provides shelter to a vast variety of flora and fauna including several species which are at the verge of extinction. The natural biodiversity of the forest includes land, aquatic as well as avian population. The place also serves as a fascinating tourist destination which invites people from all over the world.

History of Bir Gurdialpura Wildlife Sanctuary
Bir Gurdialpura Wildlife Sanctuary previously served as a hunting reserve of the erstwhile rulers of Patiala city. The place was preferred owing to its good ecological values. However post independence the scenario changed and a dire need for protecting the wildlife of the region arose among the farmers of modern Punjab. Initially the forest was announced to be a protected area but later as per the provisions of the Fauna of Patiala Act it was converted into a sanctuary by the Government of India.

Flora and Fauna of Bir Gurdialpura Wildlife Sanctuary
Bir Gurdialpura Wildlife Sanctuary is the abode of several varieties of plants. Common flora which grow in this region are Dhak, Arjuna, Jamun, Beri, Shisham, Simbal, Drek, Neem, Eucalyptus, Kikar and many more. The sanctuary also shows diversity in terms of fauna, some of which are even endangered. Prominent dwellers of the forest include Black Buck, Parakeets, Jackal, Peafowl, Blue Bull, Hare, Jungle Cat etc. Endangered animals of the sanctuary enlist River Dolphin, Python, Pangolin and Otter. The sanctuary also hosts a deer park and a zoo which shelters a number of wild animals. Other faunal species which can be spotted here are Spotted Owl, Red Jungle Fowl and Hog Deer.

Bir Gurdialpura Wildlife Sanctuary is very enticing for nature lovers and photographers. Forest safaris make the visit to the sanctuary immensely enjoyable. It is a paradise for birdwatchers as numerous birds flock around in the sanctuary. Buses and taxis can be availed from Samana or Patiala city to reach the place. Chandigarh is the nearest airport.
