Bimal Kar was a well-known Bengali writer and novelist. His compositions reflected a modern mind thereby inspired young writers.

Bimal Kar (September 19, 1921) was born in Taki in West Bengal. He had spent his youth in Asansol and places like Dhanbad, Gomoh, Hazaribagh and Jabalpur. He received Sahitya Akademi Award in Bengali (1975) for his novel `Asamay`. He passed away on 26 August 2003.

He has composed several Bengali classics. He has written dramas depicting the society of Bengal. Bimal Kar had different narration styles. For instance there are stories which have dialogue and some which do not stress on dialogue. He has described West Bengal and Chhota Nagpur. He had strength to think like a women when he wanted to. As he was involved in several professions it helped him to write on various themes. He supported several young writers in whom he supported at the start of their literary careers.

He also wrote classics for children. He created Kinkar Kishore Ray, a retired magician who solved mysteries with the help of his two assistants. He also created another detective character known as Victor. He worked as a journalist with newspapers like Parag , Paschimbanga and Satyajug after moving to Kolkata. He was also associated with Desh magazine from 1954 to 1982. He received Ananda Puraskar in 1967 and Saratchandra Award from University of Calcutta in 1981. He was also associated with other magazines like Shiladitya and Galpapatro.

His other works include novels like Dewal, Purna Apurna, Jadubansa and Balika Badhu. He was responsible for introducing a new trend in Bengali short stories with his clear language. He was a favourite among the average Bengali readers. He had the ability to craft characters and tell stories skilfully.

His novellas include: Deoyal, Nim Fuler Gondho, Kushilob, Osomoy, Sannidho, Dongson, Khorkuto, Moho, Dwip, Procchonno, E Aboron, Swapne, Nirosro, Osesh, Kharkuto, Mallica, Granthi and Balika Badhu.

His works for children are: Raboner Mukhosh, Ekti Photo Churi`r Rahasya, Neel Banorer Haar, Aloukik, Ekti Obhisopto Puthi o OstodhatU, Pakhighar, Bagher Thaba, Kalbaishakhir Ratre, Jadukorer Rahsyamoy Mreetyu, Circus theke Palea, Holud Palak Badha Teer, Sudhananda Pretsidha o Kikira, Harano Diarir Khoje, Mondargarher, Rahasyamay Jotsna, Bhuler Phade Nabakumar, Turuper Sesh Tash, Sonar Gharir Khoje, Haider Laner Tero Nombor Barir Coffin Baxo, Gajopati Bhejitable Shoe Company, Kishore Phire Esechilo, Jhiler Dhare Ekdin, Phuldani Club, Sonali Saper Chobol, Mayurganjer Nirshigosadan, Doshti Kishore Uponyas, Kikira Somogro, Swanirbachito Kishore Golpo, Sisher Angti, Ajab Desher Gajab Raja and Ek Bhoutik Malgari aar Guardsaheb.

For Anandamela magazine he has written some stories like: Magician, Bhunikaka`r Chauroshtomh, Keu Ki Esechilo, Mojadar Ek Football Match aar Danapuri, Bonobiral, Ekti Bhuture Ghori. His Doshti Kishore Uponyas include ten stories: Wondermama, Gojopoti Vegetable Shoe Company, Aloukik, Siser Angti, Harano Jeep er Rahasya, Kisore Fire Esechilo, Mondargor`er Rahasyamoy Jyotsna, Harano Diary`r Khonje, Kaalbaishakh`er Ratre, Rabon`er Mukhosh. He has written one Drama known as Ghughu.
