Bhonsle dynasty witnessed Shivaji as its most prominent member of clan. Other than the Bhonsle Maharajas of Satara, rulers of Bhonsle dynasty established themselves and Nagpur and Kolhapur in 18thcentury. The Bhonsle kings who ruled Thanjavur were descendants of Shivaji`s stepbrother Venkoji. The Bhonsle of Satara and Kolhapur were descendants of Shivaji`s sons, Shambhuji and Rajaram.
Post defeat of the Marathas in the hands of the British, they were forced to accept British rule. The Bhonsle dynasties continued as rulers of their princely states thereby accepting the suzerainty of British. Bhonsle dynasty was founded by Raghuji Bhonsle of Berar in 1730.
Maloji Bhonsle, Shivaji`s grandfather claimed descent from the Sisodia clan of Rajputs. The lineage follows: Rana Ajay Singh of Mewar, Rana Sujjan Singh (Sajjan Singh), Dilapee Singh, Sidhoji, Bahiroji or Bhosaji, Devaravji, Ugrasen, Shubhrakrushna, Roopsinhji, Bhoomindraji, Dhapaji, Barahatji, Kheloji, Parasoji, Babaji, Maloji Bhosle, Vithoji, Shahuji, Shivaji, Sambhaji and Rajaram.
