Established in 1861, it was the second municipality in Indian mainland. The town is known for its historical and religious significance. As per legend, Bheemunipatnam had been originated in the days of the Mahabharatha. Bheemunipatnam has lots of places of interest that are worth visiting.

Demographics of Bheemunipatnam
According to 2001 India census, the town had a population of 44,156 of which the males were 49% and females were 51% and 11% of the population was under 6 years of age. On the basis of the report of same year, the town had an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. The male literacy was 67% and female literacy was 54%.

Historical Significance of Bheemunipatnam
The town has gained prominence owing to its historical significance. According to researchers, historical evidences of Buddhist Culture dating back to 3rd century BCE have been found at this town. Buddhist remains were found during the excavations here along with Relic caskets. The land of Bheemunipatnam also hints about one of the Dutch settlements. In the 17th century, Bheemunipatnam was one among the major Dutch settlements of the Dutch Coromandel coast. It was known as Bimilipatnam to the Dutch. Then this town is also associated with the British East India Company. The company had made Bheemunipatnam their main trading base of the east coast. The Bhimili port used to operate passenger vessels to Madras (now Chennai) and Calcutta (now Kolkata) during the British Raj.

Bheemunipatnam, Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh The beach of Bheemunipatnam is known to be one of the safest beaches for swimming. It is located at the mouth of Gosthani River in Visakhapatnam district. The beach has soft golden sand, blue water and is adorned with coconut trees. The beach is also ideal for sunbathing.

Tourism of Bheemunipatnam
There are lots of tourist sites that can be explored. There is a Hindu temple on the eastern side of Pavurallakonda facing the sea. Dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the temple is said to have been built around 14th century by Mindi Kings. The town is home to two more temples which date back to the times of Chola including Bheemeswaralayam and Choleswaralayam. There are two ancient churches in the town namely `The Red Church` and `The Andhra Baptist` which has rich history. One can also visit Hollanders Green"s grave which certainly makes the oldest Christian grave in Andhra Pradesh. Those who love nature can explore Erra Matti Dibbalu, literally meaning Red Earth Hillocks. It is said to look like a mini Chambal valley.
