It is situated in an area near the River Seeresude, a small tributary of the River Chandragiri. Bendru Theertha Hot Spring contains traces of sulphur and is known to have curative properties. It is listed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as the only natural hot spring of South India. A pool has been constructed around the spring for visitors to experience the warmth of the hot spring. Bendru Theertha Hot Spring is the oldest hot spring in South India.

Geology of Bendru Theertha Hot Spring
Bendru Theertha Hot Spring is located in a non-volcanic region. The temperature of the spring water generally remains at 99 degree F to 106 degree F. As such, it is a rare phenomenon to find a hot spring there. It is believed that the geothermal energy of the hot rocks underground heats up the water table. As the density of the heated water is lower than normal water, it comes out in the form of a spring.

Bendru Theertha Hot Spring is a pilgrimage centre for Hindus. Every year on the occasion of Teertha Amavasya day, people consider this day to be auspicious and come to the hot spring for a holy bathe. They believe that a dip in the pool drives away all skin diseases like eczema, allergic rashes and many more ailments.

The nearest airport to reach the spring is the Mangalore International Airport and Puttur Railway Station is the nearest rail head. Tourists can opt for road transport to reach the hot water spring from Mangalore. There are private buses that carry people from Puttur to Bendru Theertha Hot Spring.
