Battle of RahonBanda Singh Bahadur had conquered and occupied the Doaba of Bist Jullundur that comprised of the present districts of Jullundur and Hoshiarpur. It was on the border of the province of Sirhind. Within a few weeks many petty officials in the districts of the Jullundur Doab were turned out. In their places Sikh tahsildars and thanedars were appointed. Shamas Khan was the faujdar of Doaba Bist Jullundur with his capital at Sultanpur. The Sikhs addressed a letter to Shamas Khan calling him to submit, to carry out certain reforms. Shamas Khan gave an evasive reply to the messenger that he would soon come to meet the Sikhs. Shamas Khan was a clever officer who collected a huge army who proceeded against the Sikhs. They had with them almost 4,000 to 5,000 horses and about 30,000 infantry armed with match locks and other weapons. The Sikhs soon received the message of the enemy marching towards them. They too made immediate preparations and proceeded against the enemy with their force numbering 40,000 to 50,000 horse and foot soldiers. As they came to the town of Rahon, about 7 km from Sultanpur, they occupied the mounds of some old brick furnaces lying to the north-west. They sent out patrols in different directions. They ordered the Chaudharies, revenue officials and others to submit. When the enemy force along with Shamas Khan came closer the Sikh army began hurling on them about 10,000 to 12,000 balls and stones from different directions. The enemy soon became scattered and startled by the sudden blow of the Sikh forces. Shamas Khan soon took control over the situation ordered for a steady advance. The Muslim force with their 40,000 to 50,000 soldiers then charged the Sikh army. As the Sikhs were heavily outnumbered they retreated back to the fort of Rahon. The crusaders surrounded the fort. The Sikh army formed small groups and at night came out of the fort and attacked the enemy. This resulted in some loss of the enemy force. The Sikhs then slowly slipped away from the fort. Shamas Khan did not risk of following them. He divided the camp and marched away from Rahon before daybreak. The Sikhs however, did not quit the neighbourhood of Rahon and were waiting in the neighbouring bushes. In the morning a thousand of them rushed upon Rahon and attacked the garrison. They easily occupied the fort and established themselves therein. The battle of Rahon was fought on 11 October 1710. Within a short span of time the complete situation changed after Banda Bahadur being appointed as the commander of the Sikh forces. It was a situation of general Sikh uprising throughout eastern and south-eastern Punjab except the capital city of Lahore. After occupying Rahon the Sikhs moved on to Jullundur. The Pathans of this place were so terrified that they ran away. Hence the Sikhs easily won the. They also Hoshiarpur and like all others of the neighbourhood. The rulers of these areas acknowledged the authority of the conquerors. Thus the whole of the Bist Jullundur Doab came under the control of the Sikhs. The whole of Majha, the Rearki and Kandi as far as Pathankot was under their sway. The Sikhs had complete control over the territory of Sirhind, from Machhiwara to Karnal.
