Barnala is a city nestled in the Punjab state of India. It was previously situated in the district of Sangrur and at present is the capital of the latest district of the state. It has a mean elevation of 227 metres (744 feet). Barnala is a standard sized town with all the facilities available at a reachable distance. The adjacent agriculture rich villages like Rajgarh, Dhanaula, Uppli, Pherwahi and Amla Singh Wala economically support it. It has a varied populace supporting local industries and food business. On the basis of provisional data of 2011 census, the city had a population of 116,454, of which males were 62,302 and females were 54,152. According to the report of the same year, the literacy rate of Barnala was 79.59 per cent.
History of Barnala
There are different opinions about the history of Barnala but no historical detail is available that how the name Barnala came into existence. According to some, earlier this city was named as Anahatgarh. While some others are of the opinion that Vaaran being a region because of frequent storms was at that time also called Varna. So Barnala was called a land of too many storms which later on became Barnala. Another account reveals that Baba Ala Singh built a fort here in which there was a "Baahuli". Due to precision and Malwai accent it was known as "Baain". Thus, Baain Wala eventually turned out to be known as Barnala.
