Banwari Lal Joshi is presently the Governor of Uttar Pradesh since July 28, 2009. He has served in the same post for the state of Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, and also served as the Lt Governor of Delhi. Former to his present term his tenure as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi was from June 9, 2004 to April 9, 2007. He was appointed the Governor of Meghalaya on April 2007 and in October 2007 he was appointed as the governor of Uttarakhand.
Early Life of Banwari Lal Joshi
Shri Banwari Lal Joshi was born at a remote village of Choti Khatu in Nagaur district, in Rajasthan, on 1st April 1934. He completed his education far away in Kolkata though he was born in Rajasthan. He did his graduation from the Scottish Church College. He also obtained a degree in the discipline of Law from the University Law College affiliated to the famous University of Calcutta.
Professional and Political life of Banwari Lal Joshi
Banwari Lal joined the Indian Police Service in Rajasthan and thus began his career in 1957. In 1962 he moved to the Govt. of India. He worked in various sectors like the Interpol, Counterfeiting, Narcotics, Industrial Security, United Nations Correctional Work and Juvenile Delinquency, while he was associated with the Indian Police Service. He has also worked with the former Prime Ministers like Lal Bahadur Shastri in the PMO and also with Indira Gandhi for over four years. Banwari Lal Joshi has also served the Ministry of External Affairs. He held the post there the First Secretary in High Commissions of India both at Islamabad and London. In the Embassy of India at Washington D.C., he had also been the Head of Chancery.
In order to get involved with the social work he 1991, he took voluntary retirement from the I.P.S, in 1991. He, thus, engaged himself in various other social activities. Above and beyond he also started working as an Advisor in a large industrial group. He moved to the United States of America in 1993 as the Director of two renowned American Companies. At the same time he was also involved with the California based NGO, `Foundation For Excellence Inc` as its Executive Director. He was selected as the Member of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission, on his return from the USA. This position is, equivalent to a High Court Judge, where he worked for four years.
On 9 June 2004 Banwari Lal took up the post of Lt. Governor of Delhi. He served in this position until April 2007 when he was appointed as Governor of Meghalaya. He was appointed as Governor of the State of Uttarakhand in October 2007. On 28 July 2009 he was appointed as Governor of Uttar Pradesh.
