Bangabasi College, KolkataBangabasi College is an educational institution of national importance. The College was established under the private management in the year 1887. The college was originated under the prophetic vision and spirit of Late Acharya Girish Chandra Bose. Also it received the guiding inspiration from Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. The aim of this educational institution is two fold- first to educate the higher number of students and also to nurture the spirit of nationalism in the mind of the young students at the colonial era and to inspire them in freedom fighting. At the same time, Bangabasi College marked an indirect protest challenging the narrow educational policy of the Hunter Commission.

Acharya Girish Chandra Bose founded Bangabasi School in 1885, in a rented house in Bowbazar Street with six teachers and twelve students. From this school Bangabasi College gradually emerged. The College got affiliation for B.A, B.L. and M.A. courses to meet the requirement of the students. In the year 1903, the college moved to its present premises at 19, Scott Lane. After that there was a steady growth of the college with the introduction of the Honors courses in various subjects. In the early 1920s, there was a growing need for scientific education, which was met by strong science faculty of Bangabasi College. The Arts faculty was also very strong; who together set a higher standard of academics that had no peer at that time.

After the independence in 1947, three new branches of the institution were opened which, later through the interference of University Grants Commission (UGC) changed into Bangabasi Morning College, Bangabasi Day College and Bangabasi Evening College. All of them are housed in the same building, only Bangabasi College of Commerce was situated in the separate building on April 11, 1960. The College became co-educational in 1979 and the college authority opened another commerce department. The year of India`s independence coincided with the diamond jubilee year of the college. The celebration was inaugurated by Chakraborty Rajagopalachari.

The Governing body of Bangabasi College consists of one post for President, one Secretary, two members from Calcutta University Nominee, three members from Government Nominee, four members as teachers` representatives, two members as non teaching staff representatives and one member as Students` representative. Apart from these an academic subcommittee and a Finance subcommittee have been formed as per statute of Calcutta University in order to maintain academic and financial discipline in the college. In addition to these committees there are the Library Sub-Committee, Education Sub-Committee etc that maintains different disciplines in the college.

The College offers various courses in arts, science and commerce streams. The science subjects offered for honors course are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Zoology, Botany, Anthropology, Computer Science and Geography. Honors subjects for Arts stream are English, Bengali, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Philosophy. Financial Accounting, Direct and Indirect Taxation, Cost and Management Accounting, Indian Financial System and Financial Market, Operations are offered as the honors subject for B.Com course.

There are strict rules in the college regarding attendance, conduct and discipline as well as the general rules. The medium of instruction is English, Bengali or both. Election of class representatives to the general committee of the students` union is usually held in the month of December. Change of subjects or courses may be allowed as per rules of the University within one month of the date of Commencement of the concerned class.. Atleast 75% attendance is needed. Students must appear in all the college examinations and tests.

The college has completed its centenary in the year 1987. The list of alumni includes several famous personalities- Swami Lokeshwarananda, Senior Monk, Ramakrishna Mission; Shri Tushar Kanti Ghosh, Editor, Amrita Bazar Patrika; Dr. A.P. Mirta, Director General, CSIR; Prof. Yashpal, Chairman, UGC; Prof. P.K. Bose, former Principal and Oxford Scholar, son of the illustrious founder Acharya Girish Chandra Bose and many more to name.

Bangabasi College, with its glorious tradition in teaching and scholarship, continues with its task of providing higher and progressive education to the students with the ideal of reverence, search for truth, and service to humanity.
