Baltal Valley is situated at an altitude of 2743 meters above sea level. The valley is set at the base of Zojila Pass, along the banks of Sindhi River. During the time of Amarnath Yatra, Baltal Valley is dotted with a number of pilgrim tents. Amarnath Caves are located at a distance of 15 km from Baltal Valley. Ponies are available from the valley to reach Amarnath Caves. The pilgrims are offered with free langars at the valley. There are a number of small tea stalls around the valley.

The best time to visit Baltal Valley is from the month of April to June when the weather remains pleasant. Also, during this time, the famous Amarnath Yatra takes place conducted by the Government of India. Baltal Valley can be easily reached from Sonmarg and Pahalgam. Pahalgam and Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir are the two most important tourist destinations in this region. Sonmarg is located at a distance of 15 Km and Pahalgam at a distance of 24 Km from the valley. The tourists can reach the valley via trek or by taking bus or taxi.
