Bahu Begum ka Maqbara, located at Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, is the famous tomb of Queen Bride Begum Unmatuzzohra Bano. Also known as Bahu Begum, she was the queen of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula. The monument is included amongst the tallest buildings of Faizabad and exhibits beautiful non Mughal Islamic architecture. The mausoleum, Bahu Begum ka Maqbara was built by Nawab Suja-ud-Daula as a memorial of his loving wife. The design and construction of the building have placed it amongst the architectural marvels of the country.
History of Bahu Begum ka Maqbara
The wife of Shuja-ud-Daula was popularly known as Bahu Begum. She married the Nawab in the year 1743 and used to dwell in Faizabad in her residence Moti-Mahal. She was greatly esteemed and was recognized for her rank and dignity. Most of the monuments standing in Faizabad were built by her. She died in the year 1816 after which she was buried and her Maqbara was created in Faizabad near Jawaharbagh which is known as Bahu Begum ka Maqbara. Bahu Begum ka Maqbara was build by her chief advisor Darab Ali Khan at the expense of three lakhs of rupees. Since the year of the demise of Bahu Begam up to the annexation of Awadh region, the city of Faizabad gradually witnessed downfall. After Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the son of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, shifted the capital from Faizabad to Lucknow, the glory of the city greatly demolished.
Features of Bahu Begum ka Maqbara
Bahu Begum ka Maqbara was structured with white marble in an attempt to recreate the splendour of the Taj Mahal. Although ancient, the marbles of the monument, Bahu Begum ka Maqbara have still retained their lustre and brightness rendering an immortal aura to the mausoleum. Bahu Begum ka Maqbara rises to a height of about 42 metres and offers a magnificent view of the city and its splendid surroundings. The tomb has been well preserved since years by the archaeology department (Archaeological Survey of India) and forms one of the significant monuments of the country.
