A gentle belly massage is a good remedy for over eating, indigestion, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Massaging stomach and abdomen is safe. Regular stomach massages tones and strengthens entire stomach region, enhances digestion and stimulates the bowels. Aromatherapy massage is a beautiful way to express caring and help relieve the stress of a loved one. The benefits of aromatherapy massage can also be enjoyed through self massage. According to traditional Chinese medicine the abdomen houses an important energy centre; therefore massaging this area also energizes the body.
Steps to Massage Stomach
It is natural to rub the abdomen when suffering a stomach ache and any form of abdominal massage, however basic is extremely comforting.
Always use a clockwise motion when massaging the stomach as this follows the workings of the intestine; this can help to relax the abdomen, which, in turn, can aid digestion.
•Stroke down from the solar plexus hand behind hand to the navel.
•Stroke down from the solar plexus, tracing rib-cage to waistline with both hands.
•With hands reinforced "iron" in circles all over the abdomen with even pressure.
•Squeeze up each side from hipbones past the waist.
•Rub backwards and forwards across lower abdomen and then repeat step 1.
Another variation of Self Tummy Massage:
•Stand with feet parallel and about shoulder width apart.
•Rub hands together briskly until they are hot.
•Immediately place them, one on top of the other, just below the bellybutton.
•Using palm and fingers rub in small, clockwise circles around belly button, i.e. following the path of colon.
•Rub in small circles at first. Gradually make them bigger, eventually massaging entire abdominal and stomach area.
•Focus on the heat penetrating the abdomen.
•Massage for several minutes, once or twice a day.
•When finished cover the area immediately to keep it warm.
