Arki fort is situated about 40 kilometres from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, in a small town named Arki located in Solan district which was the former capital of the princely state of Baghal. Baghal was founded by a Panwar Rajput, named Rana Ajai Dev, around 1643 and in 1650 Arki was declared as the capital by Rana Sabha Chand. The fort was constructed by Rana Prithvi Singh, who was a descendent of Rana Sabha Chand, in the period of 1695 to 1700. It is the private property of the descendents of Raja Rajendra Singh, the erstwhile ruler. The fort played an important role in assisting the invasion of Gurkhas during the Gurkha War which took place in 1815-16. Amar Singh Thapa, the Gurkha General, used it as a centre to make their advances to Himachal Pradesh, up to Kangra.
