Arki Fort
Arki fort, in Himachal Pradesh, is an ancient fort which has presently been converted into a heritage resort. It houses beautiful murals and frescos which depict the exquisite imagination of artists and lifestyle of local folks.

Arki fort is situated about 40 kilometres from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, in a small town named Arki located in Solan district which was the former capital of the princely state of Baghal. Baghal was founded by a Panwar Rajput, named Rana Ajai Dev, around 1643 and in 1650 Arki was declared as the capital by Rana Sabha Chand. The fort was constructed by Rana Prithvi Singh, who was a descendent of Rana Sabha Chand, in the period of 1695 to 1700. It is the private property of the descendents of Raja Rajendra Singh, the erstwhile ruler. The fort played an important role in assisting the invasion of Gurkhas during the Gurkha War which took place in 1815-16. Amar Singh Thapa, the Gurkha General, used it as a centre to make their advances to Himachal Pradesh, up to Kangra.

Architecture of Arki Fort
Arki fort presents an exquisite blend of impressive architecture and intriguing historical legends. The fort stands on the hillside over the terraces. The foundation of the renowned Diwankhana of the fort was laid down by Rana Shiv Sharan Singh in the year 1830. It also features beautiful frescos and murals belonging to the Pahari School of miniature paintings which have been added later, in 1850, by Raja Kishen Chand. These frescos are the exact representations of the contemporary lifestyle prevailing in the nearby hills of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. These mainly comprise paintings showcasing the scenic landscape of the hills, decorative floral designs and paintings exhibiting the wondrous imaginations and fantasies of the artists.

Other Features of Arki Fort
Arki fort is throughout adorned by thematic contrast and perfect balance of designs, forms and colours. Although much part of the fort is presently in ruins, some of its parts have still retained good condition and have been converted into a heritage resort. The plush and beautifully decorated rooms are the representatives of the royal splendour and grandeur. It also offers majestic view of snow clad mountains and scenic hill stations including Subathu, Kasauli and Shimla. The royal family of the fort uses another part of it as their residence, lending some of it to the home guards.
