Aranthangi is located in Pudukkottai district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a town and a municipality that is located 32.31 M above the sea level. It is 70 degree east in longitude and 10 degree at north in latitude. According to history Aranthangi was ruled by Thondaimans. The town has a minimum temperature of 27.1°C while its maximum temperature exceeds to 46.4°C. The weather here remains soothing and comfortable and the climatic conditions also remain moderate. The town receives maximum rainfall during the period of North east monsoon. The annual rainfall here varies from 300 mm to 800 mm.
Demography of Aranthangi
According to the Indian census report of 2011 Aranthangi had a population of 34,266. Males constitute 49% and females constitute 51% of the population. The average literacy rate is 50%. It is lower than the national average of 59.5%. 52% are males and 48% are females are literates. In Aranthangi 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Aranthangi is the second largest town in Pudukkottai district. Till 1974 Aranthangi was regarded as the most populated place in the southern part of Thanjavur district.
The people here are mainly dependent on the agriculture. Some of the major crops grown here are groundnut, paddy and sugarcane. They income for paddy springs from few villages like manavanallor, maivayal and nagudi. People residing along the sea shore like Mimisel, Kottaipattinam, Kattumavadi, Jagathapattinam depend on fishing. A chemical factory and a sugar factory are located in the outskirts of the town.
Tourist Places in Aranthangi
There are several tourist spots in Aranthangi visited by tourists. A ruined fort located in town is one of the prominent places here. The walls of the fort are built using mud. There`s no exact proof about the time of the construction of the fort but it can be said that the fort had been built by the Tondaimans. They were not associated with the Pudukkottai but ruled Aranthangi during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. An important temple dedicated to Rajendra Chola Varma is also located here. It is believed to have been constructed in the eleventh century. Vellar River passes through this town.
Aranthangi is also a famous pilgrimage spot. Educational Institutes in Aranthangi
Many schools and colleges have been established here in Aranthangi. Many children residing here receive education from schools run by the government. Apart from this there are many private schools here. A private Arts and Science College and a government Polytechnic College are also located here. Of late the town has established a government arts and college within the premises of the government polytechnic college campus.
Aranthangi is well connected with all modes of transport. Tourists can reach the town by taking busses and trains available here. During the World War a runway known as Thanjavur-Sayalkudi road and Trichy Mimisal Road was constructed that passes through the town.
