Annur is a panchayat town in the district of Coimbatore, which forms a part of the Tamil Nadu state of India. The panchayat town of Annur is also regarded as a cotton textile and manufacturing hub comprising of several yarn spinning mills and about 100 cotton-ginning factories. This region has more than 100 edible oil mills. Annur is also considered to be one of the fastest growing towns in the district of Coimbatore. The fact that it has become one of the hottest business centers and real estate targets is just because of its sound business acumen and well connected roads to Coimbatore, Karnataka and Kerala.
Etymology of Annur
There are two stories behind the naming of this town. The first story says that the name of the town was derived from `Manniyur`, which again was taken from the name of a local monarch called Manni. The second story says that the name Annur was derived from "Vanniyur", later transformed to Anniyur and now to Annur.
Location of Annur
It is located north-east of the city. It is approximately 29 kilometers from the central heart of the city Gandhipuram. It is located at 11.23 degree N 77.13 degree E. It has an average elevation of 338 metres.
Demographics of Annur
According to 2007 India census, the town had a population of 18,242 of which males were 45% and females were 55%. On the basis of the report of same year, it had an average literacy rate of 6%, which was higher than the national average of 9.5%. The literacy rate of male was 54% and female was 55%. The languages most spoken here are Tamil, English, Kannada and Telugu.
Tourist Attraction of Annur
The town of Annur has several spots which attracts thousands of tourists ever year. Among all, Annur Manneeswar Temple is the most popular one. It is one of the oldest temples and is lovingly known as Kongunadu. The auspicious occasions celebrated in this temple are Navaratri, Tamil New Year, Ayppasi Annabishekam, Thiru Karthigai, Sani Pearchi and Thiruvathirai.
