Anil Kumble is a right-arm leg spin bowler who took 619 wickets in test cricket and remains the third-highest wicket taker of all time. He is an Indian former cricketer and the previous captain of tests and One Day Internationals, who played Tests and One Day Internationals for long 18 years.
Early Life of Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble was born in 17th October 1970 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. His parents are Krishna Swamy and Saroja. He also has a brother named Dinesh Kumble. His primary school was Holy Saint English School and began playing cricket on the streets of Bengaluru. He also joined a club called "Young Cricketers" at the age of 13 only and completed his pre-university college education from National College Basavanagudi. He is an Engineering student from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering in 1991-92.
Career of Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble made his debut for Karnataka against Hyderabad on 30th November 1989 by taking 4 wickets. Then he was selected for India Under-19s against Pakistan. He scored 113 in the first test and 76 in the second. He made his One Day International debut against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in the Austral-Asia Cup on 25th April 1990. His Test debut came in the same year when India toured England for a three-test series. He did not play any tests match until 1992.
Anil Kumble picked up 13/138 in "Irani Trophy" against Delhi and this performance helped him to earn a place in the Indian side that toured South Africa and Zimbabwe. It was in the 1992 Indian tour of South Africa, taking eight wickets in the second Test. He took 18 wickets at an average of 25.94 and with an economy rate of 1.84 in the four test series. Later, Kumble took 21 wickets in three Tests at an average of 19.8 when England toured India. He picked up seven wickets for 165 runs in the third Test of the series played at Mumbai.
Kumble took his first 50 wickets in10 test matches and the record remained the fastest by an Indian bowler till Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed him. His 100 Test wickets in 21 test matches, the second fastest by an Indian bowler after Erapalli Prasanna. On 27th November 1993, he took six wickets for 12 runs in a One Day International against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in the final of the Hero Cup, which was an Indian record for very long time. In January 1994, when Sri Lanka toured India, he picked up his first 10 wicket in his 14th match. He picked up 11 wickets for 128 runs in the match.
His best performance came against Hampshire in a drawn match in "County Championship", picking up 13 wickets for 192 runs. This performance in the English county cricket was celebrated by Wisden as they named him one of their five cricketers of the Year in 1996. He was then selected for the Indian side for 1996 World Cup Cricket. He was a part of all the seven matches that India played. He was the top wicket taker in the match with 15 wickets at an average of 18.73.
Kumble is one of only two bowlers ever to have taken all ten wickets in a test innings, taking 10 for 74 against Pakistan in the second test played in Delhi in February 1999. On 6th October 2004, he became the only third spinner in the history of Test cricket after Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan and the second Indian bowler after Kapil Dev to take 400 test wickets. On 11th March 2006, he took his 500th Test wicket. He announced his retirement from One Day International Cricket on 30th March 2007. He is the single test cricketer to have taken all the ten wickets in an innings and score a test hundred in his career. Kumble was also appointed as the captain of the Indian Test cricket team on 8th November 2007. He became the first Indian bowler and the third in the world to reach the milestone of 600 Test wickets on 17th January 2008, in the third test against Australia at Perth. He is the third bowler after Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne to take 600 Test wickets.
Anil Kumble announced his retirement from International test cricket, first class cricket, and list A cricket forms on 2nd November 2008, in the 3rd Test match against Australia at New Delhi. He agreed to credit his contract with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) contract of the Indian Premier League following retirement. In 2010 Indian Premier League, he led the team to the semi-finals. Then he announced his retirement from Indian Premier League on 4th January 2011.
Kumble has been appointed to the athlete`s commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He was also elected as The President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association on 21st November 2010. Kumble was appointed as the new Chairman of International Cricket Council Committee on 12th October 2012.
Coaching Career of Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble was appointed as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team by The Board of Control for Cricket in India for a period of one year on 24th June 2016 but resigned. His first series as a coach was against the West Indies in July where India played four Test matches. His first series as coach was against the West Indies in July where India played four Test matches, winning 2-0. Afterwards, India beat New Zealand 3-0 in the Test series, the team"s second successive Test series win as a coach. India also defeated England 4-0 in the five Test series in November-December and India"s fourth Test series win came against Bangladesh under his guidance.
