Ambrette Seed essential oil is a pale white liquid displaying a rich, sweet, floral-musky, leathery bouquet with a warm, dried fruit, animalic, slightly spicy-aromatic odor. This evergreen shrub grows well in India, and is cultivated in the West Indies, China and Indonesia. The Ambrette seed is used as a spice in the East and as a musk substitute in perfumery. In India it is popularly known as Mushkdana or Kasturi Bhendi. Traditionally, it cures cramp, indigestion, acidity and other stomach complaints, and treats headaches and nerves. The Ambrette Seed oil is extracted from the musky, kidney-shaped, fully ripened seeds. When Ambrette Seeds are distilled, a liquid essential oil is extracted which contains a high amount of palmitic acid. The oil should be allowed to mature for a few months before use in flavours or fragrances, to allow the fatty acid notes to subdue and a rich, sweet, floral-musky almost wine-like or brandy like odour to develop.

Historical Uses
The Chinese used it to treat headaches, and in Egypt it is used to sweeten the breath and as an emulsion in milk to treat itches. In Ayurveda, the seeds are used as spice, & in treating the cramps, indigestion, & stomach complaints. The seeds are used to give flavour to the coffee of the Arabs.

In Aromatherapy, the oil is effective for anxiety, depression, fatigue or other stress-related conditions, since it has a rich, musky smell and has both relaxing and stimulating properties. It is warming and calming and said to be an aphrodisiac. It is also good for cramps, muscular aches and poor circulation.

Ambrette seeds are best known for their "exalting" effect which they impart to perfumes, and can be use in a wide range of compositions including musk bases, high class florals or oriental bouquets and incense perfumes. The Ambrette seed oil is mixed well with Mandarin oil, Orange oil, Peppermint oil, Rosemary oil and Spruce oil. However, Ambrette seed oil is safe for home use only if it is diluted before application and hence, it should not be used in a concentrate form.
