Ambarnath is a city and also a municipal council in the district of Thane in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The tern actually signifies `Lord of the Sky`. As of the census of 2001 Ambarnath had a population of 203,795. This small little region besides having a rich history has the beautiful panoramic view of the Western Ghats in the monsoon season. Ambarnath is actually located on the way to Pune from Mumbai and was a part of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIP). The temple constructed here in the honor of Lord Shiva dates back to the 10th century and is a beautiful shrine sculpted out of stone. The temple is believed to have been constructed in Hemad style architecture. In fact the Shiva temple is one of the main features of this city. The naïve and simple life of the people of this city is worth appreciation.

Shantisagar Water ResortAmbarnath has been a residence place for many of the families that have worked for the industries in the area. This beautiful place also has a lot of tourist attractions, which attracts many visitors every year. The places one must visit when he comes here are the Shiva Temple, One Tree Point, GIP Tank, Ayyapa Temple, Chikloli Dam, Shantisagar Water Resort, Barvi Dam. An important pilgrimage as well as a great hiking spot known, as Malang Gadh is also close by. In the eastern part of Ambarnath there are beautifully planned residential housing society. One of the housing society known as Suryodaya Housing Society is probably the largest housing society of bungalows in entire Asian continent. This particular housing society had four sections called Kansai, Kher, Saal and Vadavali. The area in the western part of Ambargarh was known as Jausai and the east was called Kansai, which were named after the two `sais` or sisters. The section called Saai was named after renowned saint from Shirdi called Sai Baba. This section also has a huge temple near the school called Bhagini Mandal. Out of these sections the first and the fourth called Kansai and Vadavali respectively were small villages in the past. It was once a pristine area of magnificent bungalows but over the span of time the architecture has taken its toll. Now small sized apartments replace the splendid bungalows.

The city of Ambarnath is also a self-contained township, which has very prominent schools. Some of the names of the popular schools in this city include Inner Wheel School, Bhausaheb Paranjape Vidyalay, Kendriya Vidyalaya or Central School, Fatima and Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya. This region also has two junior and senior colleges offering graduate degrees in the subjects of science, commerce and arts. The hill station called Matheran and Titwala are at a very short distance from the city of Ambargarh. The Titwala region also has a famous temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh.
