Allen Forest Zoo in Kanpur is one of the most visited Zoological Parks of not only Uttar Pradesh but also the whole of India.

Allen Forest Zoo, Kanpur, IndiaAllen Forest Zoo also called the "Kanpur Zoo" is a 77 hectare zoo in Kanpur, the industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh in North India. It is the largest open green space in Kanpur. It is one of the most visited Zoological Parks of not only Uttar Pradesh but also the whole of India. This zoo cum botanical garden ranks among one of the best zoos in the country. Originally a natural habitat for fauna, it is one of the few zoos in India created in a natural forest. It is an ideal place for outdoor life and picnics amongst picturesque surroundings. The zoo is open for visitors on all days from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, except on Mondays.

Etymology of Allen Forest Zoo
The Zoological Park in Kanpur was the brainchild of Sir Allen after whom the zoo bears its name. Sir Allen was a member of the then Indian Civil Service. A botanist par excellence, Sir Allen had conceived an idea to open the zoo but his plans got stuck in the debris and did not materialize. When the zoo was opened in 1971 by the Government of Independent India, it was decided that the zoo would be named after him.

Array of Animals in Allen Forest Zoo
The zoo lies among peaceful green forests and paints a pretty picture with its beautiful natural surroundings. Aviary and night house are other major attractions of this zoo. The fauna which can be found in this zoo are: White Asiatic Tiger, Asiatic Lions, Cheetah, Leopard, Jaguar, Sloth, Hyena, Black Bear, Grizzly Bear, Monkeys, Langur, Baboon, Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Musk Deer, Deer, Antelope and a variegated species of birds like Emus, Ostrich, Parrots, Parakeet, Crane and various Indian as well as European fowls. Indian Gharial is the only amphibian that inhabits the zoo. Chimpanzees and Orangutans have their own island. Night creatures are housed in a separate building which includes Porcupines, Asian Palm Civet and other nocturnal animals.

Other Attractions at Allen Forest Zoo
Inside the zoo, there is a botanical garden that boasts of a rare collection of plants. Complete with verdant flora, the garden is spread with sparkling rainwater lakes which enhances the beauty of the surroundings. The zoo encompasses ancient trees and natural forest. The zoo also houses an aquarium and life size sculptures of pre-historic dinosaurs. Tourist Nature walks and outdoor recreation activities can be enjoyed at this zoo. The zoo is also an educational site for teaching school students about environmental issues and natural habitats.

Preservation of Allen Forest Zoo
The zoo provides a veterinary hospital that treats up to 1,400 animals at a time, including hyenas, jaguars and elephants.
