Alibaug is located in the Raigad District of Maharashtra. It is located to the south of Mumbai, the capital city of West Indian State- Maharashtra.
History of Alibaug
The history of this coastal town began with the black days of Mughal era. In 17th century, after the death of Aurangzeb, Mughal was shattered into pieces and Maratha Empire emerged in the entire part of modern Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Bundelkhand. At that time, Alibaug was developed by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre the Naval Chief of Shivaji`s Kingdom. This coastal town was built to observe the Siddis and the Nizam Shahi Dynasty at Murud-Janjira. After the establishment of Portuguese empire, the British East India Company made an alliance with Portuguese. The Portuguese and British attacked Alibaug several times, but received the failures. After the establishment of British Government in India, Alibaug became the centre of scientific research. Alibaug has a magnetic observatory which was set up in the year 1904. This magnetic observatory serves as a global network now run by Indian Institute of Geomagnetism.
