Adyar, also known as Adayar, is a large city located in the southern part of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Situated on the southern banks of Adyar River, it is bordered by Buckingham Canal in the west, Besant Nagar in the east and Tiruvanmiyur in the south. It is one of the most expensive cities of Chennai. In 2018, Adyar city had a green cover of 30.1 percent, which was higher than the city"s average percentage of 14.9. This was the highest record of green cover in Adyar.
History of Adyar
The city derives its name from the Adyar River that flows through its northern border. The place was used as a hunting ground for long by the British officials since 1680s. It was first included in the map of Madras (the former name of Chennai) as a suburb in 1740 after the region was purchased by the British and merged with the Madras Presidency. The headquarters of the Theosophical Society was established here by Madam Blavatsky in the year 1883. Following this, a cultural organisation called Kalakshetra was also established in 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale with the aim of promoting traditional art and culture. Adyar was recorded as a zamindari village of Chengalpet district in the year 1931. In 1948 it was brought under the Chennai Corporation limits.

Adyar houses several sites that serve as great tourist attractions. Among them Adyar Estuary, Adyar Eco Park, Theisophical Society, Broken Bridge and Elliot"s Beach are the most popular places of this region. Some of the places have been discussed below:
Adyar Estuary: It is famous for nestling a tremendous variety of birds. However, urbanization in the region has left a great impact on the variety of birds which has depleted with time. Right at the mouth of Adyar Estuary, there is located the Broken Bridge. It is an incomplete bridge, which is considered a good place for hang out during day time. This place has also been considered as a haunted one.
Adyar Eco Park: Established in January 2011 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, it is another tourist attraction which was constructed for restoring the annihilating ecosystem of the city. The park covers an area of more than 358 acres and boasts of a vibrant fauna that includes over 10 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, 90 species of birds and 30 species of fishes. Currently, the park is restricted to some areas for visiting. The government will soon beautify the entire area.
Theosophical Society: The headquarters of the Theosophical Society is also worth a visit which offers a serene ambience for contemplating on comparative religion. The Theosophical Society Campus is home to several temples from oriental religions and is a premier institute for the study of spirituality. Located right along the Adyar Estuary, Theosophical Society has made it sure that the fragile ecosystem has not been disturbed by the constant development. Inside the Theosophical Society campus there are Adyar Big Banyan Tree, a 450-plus-year-old specimen that is among the largest in the country, and the Adyar Library and Research Centre, which is one of the world"s most important repositories of oriental spiritual literature.

Adyar also houses some of the significant institutes namely Central Leather Research Institute, which is the biggest leather research institute in the world. Adyar Cancer Institute, National Institute of Fashion Technology, IIT Madras, Anna University, Technical Teachers Training Institute and Asian College of Journalism are also located in the nearby regions of Adyar.
