Administration of Kargil District is quite different as compared to the other districts in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Administration of Kargil DistrictAdministration wise Kargil district is divided into nine blocks, namely Kargil, Taisuru, Shargole, Shakar-Chiktan, Drass, Sankoo, Zanskar, Trespone and Lungnak. The district has three Tehsils viz Kargil, Zanskar and Sankoo. Zanskar and Drass are also a Sub Division, headed administratively by a Sub Divisional Magistrate. Hill Council was constituted in Kargil in the year 2003. The district was divided into twenty six Council Constituencies. Under a government notice, four nominated Councillors also came into being in December 2004. Thus the Council has thirty members or councillors out of which twenty six members are elected and four are nominated.

There is one Municipal Committee in Kargil district namely Kargil having sixteen wards. There are around one hundred and twenty nine villages out of which two are un-inhabited. The Chairman or the Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil holds the position of a Cabinet Minister. The Chief Executive Councillor passes the Plan proposals and budget in the capacity as Chairman of Kargil Development Board. The Deputy Commissioner of Kargil is the administrative head and is also elected as Chief Executive Officer of the Hill Council. He controls the administrative machinery and is in charge for law and order.

Kargil Block where the District headquarter is located is the biggest Block. It is inhibited by three different sects; the Balti, Purki and Brogpa. Kargil town is a bit overcrowded, but the Government is doing its best to make other colonies at Kurbathang plateau. Baroo. Lying in the lap of Tiger Hill and Tololing ridges, Drass block is known for its severe cold. Drass comes at the top in the educational field in the district. Government driven plantation drive undertaken by Desert Development Programme have altered the topographical situation of Drass. Tai-Suru Block is the young Block curved out of Sankoo. It is located in the lap of Nun-Kun peaks and grand Tangol glacier. Padum and Lungnak Block are situated at a distance of 232 KM from Kargil district and borders with Himachal Pradesh. Shargol block is the newest Block established curving out of Kargil for broader development.
