The history of academic degree courses dates back to the period of the Mughal rule in India when the Madrasahs began their educational programmes and granted various academic degrees. In contemporary India, this system is no more limited to the Madrasahs. Several renowned educational institutes are famous for their degree courses in India as they have the outstanding faculty and facilities. There are several kinds of academic degree courses in India. From among the many, some of the common categories of academic degree courses available in India are undergraduate degree (Bachelor`s degree), the post-graduate degree (Master`s degree), associate degrees, Licentiate degrees, Specialist degrees, Logistician`s degrees, Engineer`s degrees, Professional Doctoral degrees, Research Doctoral degrees, M. Phil, PhD, etc.

Academic degree courses provided in India play an important role in the professional life of an individual as well. The courses are of immense importance in the Indian job sector, since a large number of the professional organizations prefer a job seeker with a relevant academic degree. Almost all the students in India, who complete the secondary education, work hard to attain at least one academic degree and most of them opt for the undergraduate degree. At the same time, there are various students throughout India who enroll for the professional degrees as well. Apart from the regular and deemed universities, the open universities providing distance education also offer academic degree courses in India. These open universities help mostly the working professionals to increase their academic qualification which goes forward to help them in their field of work in future.

Some of the academic degree courses offered in India are Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM), Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Home Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (IT), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), etc. Students can opt for any of the above courses after successful completion of their 10+2 or intermediate or class 12 examinations. Bachelor degree course in India is of three year duration whereas some of the engineering and medical colleges provide four to five years bachelor degree programs.
