A. Lakshman is regarded as an established Bharathanatyam dancer, who in a variety of roles has also taken part in several dance dramas. Lakshman, an eminent dance personality was born in Malaysia. He had his early training out there from Smt, Veera Venugopal of Bharatha Kalanjali, Malaysia. Afterward he moved to Madras (presently known as Chennai) he came under the privileged guidance of the well illustrious and highly heralded guru Kalaimamani K.J.Sarasa. Under Smt. Sarojini Sundaresan, he did receive his training in Carnatic music. Smt. Sarojini Sundaresan was a disciple of Alathoor Shri. Venkatesa Iyer.
Lakshman is one of her star pupils. He soon started teaching at Sarasalaya, his gurus` school for Bharatanatayam. He continues to teach at Sarasalaya till today, which bears a solemn statement made under oath to his skill and quality. Laksman as a performing artist also has gained himself an international repute. With his striking stage presence and his vivid idolatry to the art is right away perceptible by the senses. Lakshman has also taken part in various dance dramas in a variety of roles apart from solo performances. Some of these include:
•Sarasalaya`s "Kundrakudi Kuravanji" at the Natyotsava Festival, and "Shakuntalam" performed at Narada Gana Sabha.
•Played the role of Lord Krishna in International Dance Alliance`s "Krishnam Vande Jagat Gurum"
•Played the roles of Kamsa, Duryodhana and the wrestler in "Panchajanyam" - from Nalayiram Divya Prabhandam
Some of his other remarkable performances have been `the purandara Dasa and Vijaynagar Dasara Festival` held at Hampi, in the Indian state Karnataka; The Dance Festival of Natarajotsava held in Mysore and The Mamallapuram Dance Festival. This devoted dancer, A. Lakshman with his over 18 years of experience has received several awards during that period. To mention a few are: `Bharatha Kala Ratna`, Shree Bharathalaya conferred this award to Lakshman and, Bharath Kalachar conferred Yuva Kala Bharathi.
By many natyacharyas in the domain of Dance, he has been acclaimed as the best male dancer. The media also praise vociferously him for the skill, which he has displayed in his various performances. A. Lakshman goes forward to be completely involved in the art - both as a teacher and a performer. He coordinates "Nritya Lakshana" to teach a lot of students and create new arts.
