The British Indian infantry formation of the 7th Indian Infantry Brigade was formed in September 1939 under the British Government of India during the outbreak of World War II. It was raised by re-structuring and re-assigning the Poona Independent Brigade as the 7th Indian Infantry Brigade. In June 1940, this formation was renumbered 4th. Later in June 1940, a new 7th Indian Infantry Brigade was formed. It was initially allotted to the 5th Indian Infantry Division. Eventually the brigade was attached with the 4th Indian Infantry Division in September 1940.
The troops of the 7th Indian Infantry Brigade were sent to take part in the Sudan Campaign along with the rest of the 4th Indian Infantry Division. The infantry formation moved between the command of 5th Indian Infantry Division and the 4th Indian Infantry Division in April 1941. Later it was stationed in Cyprus. The brigade later fought in the Second Battle of El Alamein in the Western Desert Campaign during the Second World War.
Later in 1943, the 7th Indian Infantry Brigade was posted in Tunisia in 1943 and operated under the administration of 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division. It was again attached to the 4th Indian Infantry Division and took part in the Italian Campaign.
