Suryapet, TelanganaSuryapet which is also known as Bhanupuri, is a major town in Telangana. This town is well known as the Gateway of Telangana. It lies on the National Highway 9 and is equidistant from the Hyderabad and Vijayawada. With an average elevation of 266 m above sea level, Suryapet is located at 17.1500 degree north to 79.6167 degree East latitude.

Suryapet is the first "Waste-Compliant" city in India. The Suryapet municipality has won Green Leaf Award for Best Garbage Disposal in 2007. This city has won many awards for its cleanliness from the State government as well as the Union Government of Telangana and got the Best Municipality Award in Telangana.

History of Suryapet
The town of Suryapet or Suriapet in Telangana has the traces of rich history. The Chalukyan Empire, Kakatiya Dynasty, and finally Nizam Rulers ruled the place of historical tourist importance. The Pillalamarri temples with intricately carved stone pillars stand testimony to the architectural style of the Kakatiya period. The frescoes and inscriptions tell the tales of the rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty. Some temples and remains of fortified walls and buildings can be found near Undrugonda.

Suryapet had the active participation in the Telangana Rebellion against Razakar of Nizam rulers. Some of the people of Suryapet who stood against Razakars are Bhim Reddy Narasimha Reddy, Bikumalla Sathyam, Bommagani Dharma Bhiksham, Boddupally Singara Chary,Vardhelli Buchiramulu, Bandi Yadagiri, Dr.A.P.Vittal, Mallu Swarajyam, Mallu Venkata Narasimha Reddy and Rangiah Bheemiah.

Climate of Suryapet
Suryapet experiences the tropical wet and dry climate. The annual mean temperature is 36 degree Celsius. The monthly mean temperatures are 19 to 40 degree Celsius and the summers are hot and humid, with a minimum temperature of 30 degree Celsius. During the months of May and June, there are dry spells when the maximum temperatures often exceed 45 degree Celsius. Winter lasts for about 2 months, with seasonal lows dipping from 9 to 11 degree Celsius in the months of DeceSuryapet, Telanganamber and January. The month of May is the hottest month, with daily temperatures ranging from 35 to 43 degree Celsius. The month of January is the coldest month with a varying temperature from 15 to 23 degree Celsius. The highest recorded temperature is 51.02 degree Celsius and the lowest is 9 degree Celsius.

Demographics of Suryapet
According to the Census India of 2011, Suryapet had an urban metropolitan population of 1, 06,524. Suryapet is the second most populous city in Nalgonda district with a floating population of approximately 10,000 from the neighbouring villages daily. The males constitute 52 percent of the population and the females 48 percent. Suryapet has an average literacy rate of 84.88 percent, higher than the national average of 74.04 percent. The male literacy rate is 91.18 percent, and the female literacy rate is 78.74 percent. In Suryapet, 11 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.

Administration of Suryapet
Suryapet is governed by Municipality and is situated in Suryapet Urban Region. It was constituted in the year 1952, as Grade-III Municipality and at present this ULB has been upgraded to Grade-I Municipality consequent to the increase of population and area. The majority of people in this town are engaged in Commercial activities beside substantial agricultural work.

Festivals in Suryapet
Prominent Hindu festivals celebrated in Suryapet are Sankranti, Ugadi, Sri Ramanavami, Vinayaka Chavithi, Holi, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Dasara, Diwali and Maha Sivaratri. Apart from these, the regional festivals like Bathkamma and Bonalu Festivals are also celebrated. The Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, Ramadan (ninth month of the Islamic calendar) Milad-un-Nabi (Mawlid) and Muharram (Day of Ashura) and Christians celebrate Christmas and Good Friday.

Suryapet is well connected via buses and is known to have the Hi-tech bus station, which is the fourth largest bus station in Telangana. With 3 bus stations, Suryapet is well linked to the other southern cities of India.
