It spans over an area of 29 square kilometres and serves as a cherished tourist destination. The vibrant wildlife sheltered in the sanctuary includes a vast variety such as mammals, avian, rodents, reptiles and many more species. Several rare as well as endangered species can also be spotted wandering in the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary. Flora and Fauna of Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary
Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary hosts large patches of virgin forests of Meghalaya and several places are heavily infested by leeches. Some of the common faunal species which dwell here enlist Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Bison, Himalayan Black Bear, Clouded Leopard and many more. A spectacular array of birds is also found here which reside in the shrubs and bushes of the forest. The place thus forms paradise for birdwatchers. Some prominent species recorded in the sanctuary are Brown Hornbill, Manipur Bush Quail, Rufous Necked Hornbill etc. Exotic migratory birds also arrive in the sanctuary from far off regions or countries. Insects and spiders are also common here.

However, prior permission from forest range officer in Nongpoh must be acquired before entering the sanctuary. The location of the sanctuary is also quite convenient and can be easily reached from nearby towns through roadways.
