Farmana Khas is an old archaeological site near Farmana Khas village which is also referred to as `Daksh Khera` and is located in Meham Block, Rohtak District, in the state of Haryana, occupying an area measuring 18.5 hectares. It is based at a distance of nearly 15 kms away from the highway of Rohtak-Hisar and 60 kms away from Delhi. It is renowned for possessing 70 burials belonging to the Mature Harappan age dating back to 2500 to 2000 BC and other burials excavated recently during the year 2006. Excavations were conducted at Farmana Khas under the leadership of Vasant Shinde of the Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India or ASI. The geographical coordinates of Farmana Khas are between 28° 59 minutes North and 76° 49 minutes East.
Architectural Findings at Farmana Khas
Farmana Khas is subdivided in two regions, one meant for the dead and the other for alive people distinguished by a distance measuring 1 km. Inhabited portions of land occupies about 18.5 hectares and a well-planned road with homes on both its sides have also been discovered. Four complexes are present in the site and currently 26 rooms belonging to a complex with three to four kitchens, along with an equal quantity of bathrooms and a central courtyard are also existent here. Considerable amounts of pottery, seals, wheels, terracotta toys, copper bangles, whistle and a tiny gold jewel have also been unearthed.
About 70 burials are retrieved from the cemetery at Farmana Khas belonging to the Mature Harappan Age which dates back to 2500 to 2000 BC. A majority of the homes face towards south-east or north-west, or south-west or north-east and north-south. Three shell bangles, copper earrings, beads and the skeleton of a middle-aged lady are also some of the impressive discoveries. Latest research also suggested evidences of inter-regional weddings arranged by the people of Harappan civilization, for meeting commercial purposes and trade during that point of time. Beads of conch shells and bangles imported from Gujarat have also been uncovered from the archaeological site of Farmana Khas.
