The Calcutta Light Horse was a cavalry regiment under the administrative authority of British Indian Army. The unit was formed in the year 1872 and was included as a part of the British Indian Cavalry Reserve, like the regiments of Bihar Light Horse, Bombay Light Horse and the Assam Valley Light Horse.
A military reserve, tactical reserve, strategic reserve, reserve formation, or simply reserve, is a group of military personnel or units which are initially not committed to a battle by their commander so that they are available to address unforeseen situations or exploit suddenly developing opportunities. The troops of the Calcutta Light Horse served on Strategic and Military Reserve during the Boer War. The unit attacked the German ship Ehrenfels, along with the troops of the Calcutta Scottish Infantry regiment.
After the Indian independence and the Partition of India, the Calcutta Light Horse regiment was not assigned to the modern Indian Army and was disbanded in the year 1947.
