Nongkhnum River Island, MeghalayaOne of the biggest river islands in the state of Meghalaya, the Nongkhnum River Island is formed by the bifurcation of Kynshi River into two other rivers namely, the Phanliang River and the Namliang River. The Nongkhnum River Island is also known to be the second biggest river island in Asia after the Majuli Island in the north eastern state of Assam.

Completely uninhabited, this river island spreads over an area of almost 21sq. km and is one of the lesser known tourist spots in the state. The Nongkhnum River Island is famous for its sandy beach and the two magnificent waterfalls: the Weina Falls and the Langshiang Falls. This river island facilitates tourism in the West Khasi Hills district. But owing to the poor infrastructure in the area, the tourist footfalls remains low in the Nongkhnum River Island.

The nearest railway station is at Nongstoin at a distance of 15 km from the river island and the Shillong Airport is the closest at a distance of about 131 km from the Nongkhnum River Island.
