Chief Ministers of Assam are the elected head of government of the state. The first Chief Minister of Assam was Sayed Md. Sadulla in 1937, during British Rule of India. After independence of India, Gopinath Bordoloi became the first Chief Minister of Assam. The current Chief Minister of Assam is Sarbananda Sonowal.
Gopinath Bordoloi
From 11th February 1946 to 6th August 1950, Gopinath Bordoloi of the Indian National Congress had been the first Chief Minister of Assam. He was also an Indian independence activist.
Bishnu Ram Medhi
From 9th August 1950 to 27th December 1957, Bishnu Ram Medhi of the Indian National Congress had been the second Chief Minister of Assam. His contribution for the development and establishment of North Bengal and Assam is unforgettable.
Bimala Prasad Chaliha
From 28th December 1957 to 6th November 1970, Bimala Prasad Chaliha of the Indian National Congress had been the third Chief Minister of Assam.
Mahendra Mohan Choudhry
From 11th November 1970 to 30th January 1972, Mahendra Mohan Choudhry of the Indian National Congress had been the fourth Chief Minister of Assam. He was also a freedom fighter.
Sarat Chandra Sinha
From 31st January 1972 to 12th March 1978, Sarat Chandra Sinha of the Indian National Congress had been the fifth Chief Minister of Assam.
Golap Borbora
From 12th March 1978 to 4th September 1979, Golap Borbora of the Janata Party had been the sixth Chief Minister of Assam. He was a follower of Ram Manohar Lohia and Jai Prakash Narayan and was imprisoned several times during the freedom movement.
Jogendra Nath Hazarika
From 9th September 1979 to 11th December 1979, Jogendra Nath Hazarika of the Janata Party had been the seventh Chief Minister of Assam State.
Anwara Taimur
From 6th December 1980 to 30th June 1981, Anwara Taimur of the Indian National Congress had been the eighth Chief Minister of Assam. She has been the only female and Muslim Chief Minister of the state.
Kesab Chandra Gogoi
From 13th January 1982 to 19th March 1982, Kesab Chandra Gogoi of the Indian National Congress had been the ninth Chief Minister of Assam.
President"s Rule in Assam
From 12th December 1979 to 5th December 1980, then 30th June 1981 to 13th January 1982, then 19th March 1982 to 27th February 1983 and from 28th November 1990 to 30th June 1991, the State of Assam had been under the "President"s Rule".
Hiteswar Saikia
From 27th February 1983 to 23rd December 1985, Hiteswar Saikia of the Indian National Congress had been the tenth Chief Minister of Assam State. From 30th June 1991 to 22nd April 1996, he had been the Chief Minister of Assam for a second time. He is credited for improving the education scenario of the state.
Bhumidhar Barman
From 22nd April 1996 to 14th May 1996, Bhumidhar Barman of the Indian National Congress had been the twelfth Chief Minister of Assam.
Prafulla Kumar Mahanta
From 24th December 1985 to 28th November 1990, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of the Asom Gana Parishad had been the 11th Chief Minister of Assam. He again became the Chief Minister of Assam from 15th May 1996 to 17th May 2001.
Tarun Gogoi
From 17th May 2001 to 24th May 2016, Tarun Gogoi of the Indian National Congress had been the thirteenth Chief Minister of Assam. He has since led the party to a record of three consecutive electoral victories in the state as Chief Minister.
Sarbananda Sonowal
From 24th May 2016, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal of the Bharatiya Janata Party is the present Chief Minister of Assam. He is popularly known as a firebrand and dynamic youth politician "Jatiya Nayak" of Assam, a title was given to Sarbananda Sonowal by the All Assam Students Union, the oldest student body of the state.
